AWARD at Zukunftsforum 2021

The Upper Austrian market town Gunskirchen dares to take the step towards automated road freight transport, as was emphasized at the Upper Austrian Zukunftsforum 2021. The logistics company DB Schenker and the engine manufacturer BRP-Rotax are involved, the AWARD project is run by a further 27 partners from 12 European countries.

The Ongoing Challenge

The EU-funded project for an automated truck in the market town of Gunskirchen officially started in 2021 and is scheduled to run until 2025. The test track, on which a specially converted electric truck is to drive automatically, has a length of 600 meters. The test route along a public road turns out to be quite challenging, as the Project Process Manager Armin Humer from DB Schenker, who is entrusted with the project, reveals. On the way from one hub (DB Schenker) to the other hub (BRP-Rotax), the automated e-truck has to cover a sometimes confusing route with an underpass, several intersections and speed restrictions.

The logistics company DB Schenker is currently implementing plans for comprehensive automation at its locations. This includes not only self-driving trucks, but also, for example, autonomously operating forklifts in warehouse logistics.

Why did AWARD participate?
