ABSTRACT:
The Horizon Europe Work Program for 2025-2026 is currently undergoing discussions, focusing on the freight and logistics community. From our present standpoint, several crucial questions arise: What further advancements are necessary beyond the current state of development? Which areas in research and innovation should Europe prioritize to effectively support the sector’s transition towards sustainability?
During this informative session, the EU projects AWARD and SNS ICE will contribute their expertise on the subject of automation and 6G connectivity in this transportation sector. They will shed light on their ongoing experiences and highlight future needs in these domains. By bringing together the findings from all these projects, the session aims to facilitate a comprehensive discussion with the participation of an EU representative. The collective effort will strive to summarize and outline the key priority areas for development shortly, which hold significant potential for contributing to EU policy objectives. These identified areas will be crucial for prioritization in forthcoming Horizon Europe Research and Innovation Actions. EU projects, namely STORM and Boostlog, will provide valuable insights derived from recent studies, analyses, and stakeholder engagement. They aim to identify future trends and requirements within the freight and logistics transport domain, pinpointing areas where additional developments, information, and insights are lacking, thus impeding the progress of practical innovations. The session will specifically delve into the realms of digitalization, decarbonization, and circular economy.
Through collaborative discussions and informed insights, we aim to shape a sustainable and innovative future for the freight and logistics sector, aligning with EU policy objectives and fostering progress towards a greener and more efficient transportation system.

ABSTRACT:
This thematic session aims to provide unique insights and experiences from four distinct research and innovation use cases in the field of freight and logistics. These use cases have been developed as part of EU-funded projects, namely AWARD, STORM, ULTIMO, and MODI.
AWARD and MODI contribute valuable insights regarding medium to long-range freight transportation. They specifically address the challenges associated with scenarios involving automated vehicles, emphasizing aspects such as safety considerations, intermodality, and cross-border operations. These projects explore the potential benefits and obstacles of incorporating automation in freight transport, paving the way for future developments in this domain. STORM and ULTIMO, focus on the challenges of city logistics and the deployment of zero-emission scenarios in diverse urban environments. They delve into the crucial role played by combined automated vehicles in facilitating the logistics of both people and goods within cities. These projects shed light on the complexities and potential solutions for achieving sustainable and efficient urban logistics.
The session itself will be highly interactive, allowing for engaging discussions among the panel of presenters and the audience. While the presented use cases will set the scene and provide valuable context, the main focus will be on exchanging learnings and identifying future development areas in the realm of freight and logistics. This collaborative discourse will enable participants to collectively explore innovative solutions and address the challenges faced by the industry. Join us in this dynamic session as we share insights, learn from each other’s experiences, and shape the future of freight and logistics together. Your active participation and contribution will be key in driving progress and fostering innovation in this vital sector!
